Distance Learning: UGC Asks 123 Deemed Institutes To Shed The ‘University’ Tag

After the Supreme Court recently cancelled all the technical education degrees obtained through distance learning between 2001 and 2005, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has barred as many as 123 deemed education institutes from using the ‘university’ tag in their name. In a directive, UGC said, “The institutions are hereby directed to restrain from using the word ‘university’ with its name, failing which necessary action would be initiated in accordance with the UGC (institutions deemed-to-be-universities) Regulations, 2016. UGC orders 123 institutes to drop tag of ‘university’

Institutions like Jamia Hamdard, Symbiosis International University and others that are under the deemed-to-be-universities category will not be able to use the word ‘university’ in their names. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked 123 deemed-to-be-universities to drop the word from their names in a letter dated November 10.
