NEW DELHI: India’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki is planning to add 10 more Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in order to meet the ongoing demand of manpower at the dealership and future needs. The company will also invest Rs 10 crore at the existing ITIs to equip them with modern equipment and facility.
The company is already working with 141 ITIs across 27 states in India to meet the manpower needs at its dealerships and service network across India. Every year 6,000 students who enroll into the ITI professional course for automobiles get practical and theoretical training from Maruti Suzuki.
The carmaker helps students to become industry ready with different kinds of training which are held at the ITI. For this, the carmaker invests in infrastructure development (offering tools and equipment, latest vehicles, engine cut sections, etc), provides full time and part time trainers for a different kind of training to ITI students. Out of total 6,000 students who undergo the Maruti Suzuki training, more than 2,500 students get placed at Maruti dealerships across India.
Ranjit Singh, General Manager, CSR and Sustainability, Maruti Suzuki, said, “There is four integral component for making a student industry and job ready — right infrastructure (equipment and technology), world-class trainers, latest syllabus and impact of training on students. To check the overall impact of training on the student we do regular tests and examinations. The first level of training is given by ITI trainers, the second level of training is given by Maruti Suzuki and for the latest technology like AMT and CVT we have called trainer from HIDA (Overseas Human Resources and Industry Development Association), Japan.”
The carmaker primarily deals in three streams of automobile training — motor mechanic training, auto body repair and auto body paint training. For this, Maruti Suzuki has deputed one full-time trainer at the ITIs for motor mechanic training and part time trainer from Maruti for auto body repair and paint training.
The company recently conducted two-week intensive training programme at ITI Pusa which was aimed at imparting knowledge on the latest automobile technology such as AMT and CVT. In the programme, students got trained on soft skills like discipline, punctuality, cleanliness, safety, quality in the field of service. Another objective was to train the trainers in the Japanese way of automobile service training, best practices followed at Suzuki Training Centre so as to make the training methodology at par with Japan.
Maruti Suzuki has been working with industrial training since 2005. But the level of intervention from the carmaker was limited to basic practical and theoretical training. However, in 2014-15 the carmaker started taking active participation to set-up a new level of Automobile Skill Enhancement Centres (ASEC). The ASECs are equipped with a model service workshop with vehicles and latest tools and equipment.
The company has already successfully set up 52 ASECs across the country. In 2015-16, the company started a new initiative of setting up Auto Body Repair (ABR) and Auto Body Painting (ABP) facilities at ITI Pusa, Delhi and ITI Dhoraji, Rajkot, Gujarat. ABR and ABP are specialised courses under car service and repair and are being offered in select institutes across India. Taking it further the company recently set up these workshops at ITI Tollygunge, Kolkata.
