dia has increased its global presence with 31 higher education institutes grabbing a position in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-17. India’s higher education system has undergone rapid expansion over the past few decades and is now one of the largest in the world. There are now thousands of different colleges and universities in India to choose from specializing in a variety of subjects.
The Times Higher Education brings the global higher education analysts and compilers of world university rankings which provide the definitive list of the world’s best universities every year. While there is an overall improvement in the number of Indian institutes in top 500, it has also been witnessed that several private universities have made their way in the Times Higher Education Ranking.
In 2015, there were a total of 4 higher education institutes and universities in the ranking list and this year a lot of improvement can be seen as 30 universities have been ranked in the Ranking List. Also, the ranking of Panjab University has shown a decline from 276-300 to 601-800 position. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore continues to retain top spot among the Indian institutes. It is edging closer to the top 200, claiming a spot in the 201-250 band, its highest ever position.
Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) has also climbed the ladder of the Times Higher Education Ranking 2016-17. In 2015, only IIT Bombay and IIT Roorkee received the recognition, however, this year 8 IITs including IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras, and IIT Roorkee have secured a position in Top 500.
Even the renowned Indian Universities have left no stone unturned this year to grab a position in the Ranking List. Twenty two higher education institutes have been listed in the top 1000 educational institutions in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-17. The first in the list is Jadavpur University (501-600) Kolkata. The Indian universities who have been given rank in 601-800 slot include Aligarh University; Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani; National Institute of Technology, Rourkela; Savitribai Phule Pune University; Sri Venkateswara University; Tata Institute of Fundamental Research; Tezpur University; University of Calcutta, and University of Delhi.

The Indian universities who have been given rank in 800+ slot include Amity University, Amrita University, Andhra University, Acharya Nagarjuna University, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Maharaj Sayajirao University of Baroda, Manipal University, Osmania University, SASTRA University, Satyabhama University, SRM University and Vellore Institute of Technology.
The University of Oxford has become the first UK university to top the Times Higher Education World University Rankings in the 12-year history of the table. It knocks the five-time leader, the California Institute of Technology, into second place in the World University Rankings 2016-2017.
Despite losing only one higher rank of Panjab University, it is a proud moment for India & the universities to have an overall improvement in the ranking list. Also, it is a good sign that the condition of Indian Education sector has shown significant improvement and probably it would make a good impact in the days to come and more higher education institutes will make their way and secure a position.
