The state’ school education department revised the schedule for online admissions to first year junior college (FYJC) on Thursday evening, which was the last day to submit applications. While the FYJC classes will now begin on August 9, five days later than previously scheduled, the general and first merit lists will be declared on July 4 and 10.
Directorate of secondary education, Pune, released the new schedule after it gave students, who could not apply for admissions as the website kept crashing last week, two more days to fill applications, which was July 27 earlier.
More than 2.51 lakh students had signed up for online admissions by Thursday evening. Of them 2.36 lakh had completed their application, which consists of registration and option form, in which college preferences are listed. “Since the admission website was not performing well for almost a week, we had to give students more time to apply. Considering this we decided to make changes to the schedule,” said Suvarna Kharat, deputy secretary of the department.
However, colleges are upset that the new schedule has eaten into their academic year. Principals said the state should let them conduct three exams in a year, instead of four. “By the time we begin our classes, the first unit test will be upon us,” said Vidyadhar Joshi, principal, Vaze Kelkar College, Mulund. “This gives students less time to prepare and is particularly hard on those who come from regional mediums.”
According to the new schedule, the general merit list, which shows students their ranks, will be put up on July 4 at 11 am. Previously, it was scheduled to release today (June 30). Applicants can correct their information on the merit list on July 5 by submitting applications at their nearest guidance centres. A corrected list will be published on July 7.
The declaration of the first merit list has been postponed to July 10, which was earlier schedule for July 7. The second and third lists have been moved to July 20 and 29. The fourth and final merit list will be declared on August 6, instead of August 1.
