Parts of Kerala have been experiencing heavy rainfall since Sunday due to a low-pressure area formed over East Central Arabian Sea, which has been predicted to be turned into a depression.
The Indian Meteorological Department has announced orange colour code warning, asking authorities to be prepared, for six Kerala districts – Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram and Wayanad. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall measuring up to 204 millimetres can be experienced in the regions on Monday.
Educational institutions in various districts in the state will remain closed on Monday because of the predicted heavy rainfall.
District Collectors of Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Pathanamthitta have declared a holiday for educational institutions, including professional colleges, on Monday. Educational institutions, except professional colleges in Alappuzha district, will also remain closed on Monday. Educational institutions of Thrissur district will remain closed from noon.
Meanwhile, yellow colour code warning, meaning to be updated, has been declared for Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Kozhikode districts. Isolated heavy rainfall can be expected in these regions.
Roads and railway tracks in various central Kerala districts have reportedly started to submerge in the incessant rains.
As per IMD weather reports, heavy rainfall is likely to persist in the coming days also. Orange colour code warning has also been issued for Tuesday in parts of central Kerala districts – Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Idukki – and northern districts like Malappuram, Kannur and Kasaragode.
Though the depression in the Arabian Sea that has brought heavy rainfall to Kerala is expected to pass on within two days, another low-pressure area is also likely to form over the southwest and the west-central Bay of Bengal on Wednesday.
Fishermen have also been advised not to venture into Maharashtra- Karnataka-Kerala coasts and adjoining Lakshadweep areas on Monday.
