The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will train 11,884 elementary level teachers in Tripura under its two-year diploma programme in elementary education through the open and distance learning mode.
Ignou’s School of Education (SOE) signed a memorandum of collaboration (MoC) with the government of Tripura to professionally train these teachers. The MoC, which will be renewed for three years, was signed by the director of Tripura’s State Council of Educational Research & Training (SCERT) and Ignou’s registrar (admin) in New Delhi.
Ignou will conduct the training for only those teachers “who possess the qualifications stipulated as per the NCTE norms and are working in Govt/Govt. recognized primary/elementary schools, are eligible for admission to the programme, subject to relaxation of marks for reserved category candidates, as per NCTE norms”.
Ignou and the state government will develop a context specific block on elementary education in Tripura to “familiarise the teachers with the dimensions of elementary education”.
The training will be conducted in a phased manner and enrol only a 100 students per programme study centre.
“The programme must be implemented the way we have designed in IGNOU,” SOE’s SVS Chaudhary stressed.
