The National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE), the apex regulator of teachers education in India, will start ranking Teachers Training Institutes and put out top 100 institutes list by January next year, reports Livemint.
The regulator has prepared a blueprint to improve the quality and education of teachers. It may also bar 3,000 institutes from accepting fresh students in the next academic year.
NCTE Chairman A Santhosh Mathew told Livemint that they have given approval for 18,000-19,000 courses in about 15,000 colleges, of which 3,000-4,000 colleges are yet to submit the baseline information. They have been given time till June 30 to submit, failing which they won’t be able to take new admission.
The report said that NCTE is reorganising the grading system which is likely to give more weight to learning outcome of students and teacher transaction rather than focussing on physical infrastructures which were previously the case.
Several studies have confirmed that learning outcome remains a weak link and overall learning levels in Indian students remain pretty disappointing.
A national portal is being set up that will contain the details of teachers conducting classes and giving notes as classes are going to be video-shot to assess the performance of the students.
